Thing - in – itself is obscure:
For example, let us analyze our recognition. I see a dark - board. How does information come? What the German rationalists call "the thing - in - itself" of the dark - the board is obscure, I can never know it. Give us a chance to call it x. The dark - board x follows up at the forefront of my thoughts, and the psyche responds.….
I see you. You as the truth are obscure and mysterious. You are x and you follow up at the forefront of my thoughts, and the mind tosses a wave toward the path from which the effect comes, and that wave is the thing that I call Mr. or then again Mrs. So - and - so. There are two components in the recognition, one originating from outside and the other from inside, and the blend of these two, x + mind, is our outer universe. All learning is my response. (CW.II.458)
