| Why Did the Buddha Keep Silent on These Subjects |
The Buddha was a great spiritual teacher who taught people how to find peace, wisdom, and freedom from suffering.
He answered many deep questions about life, suffering, and the path to enlightenment.
But surprisingly, there were some questions he did not answer at all.
Why did the Buddha keep silent on these subjects?
These unanswered questions are known as the
"Unanswered Questions"
or
"Avyākata".
They included things like:
- Is the universe eternal or not?
- Does the self (soul) exist after death or not?
Is the world infinite or finite?
People often asked the Buddha about these topics, but he chose not to reply.
This was not because he didn’t know the answers, but because he felt these questions did not help people reach true freedom from suffering.

The Buddha focused on what really matters: how to end suffering (dukkha).
His goal was to help people awaken and find inner peace.
He believed that wasting time on metaphysical or philosophical questions that cannot be answered clearly only distracts the mind.
Instead of getting lost in debates, the Buddha taught people to:
Observe their minds and actions
Understand the Four Noble Truths
Follow the Eightfold Path
These practical teachings help people live better, become wiser, and reach Nirvana.
A Famous Story
Once, a man named Malunkyaputta asked the Buddha about these unanswered questions.
The Buddha gave an example: Suppose a man is shot with a poisoned arrow.
Instead of removing the arrow,
He says,
“I won’t let the doctor treat me until I know who shot me, what his name is, and what kind of wood the arrow is made of.”
The man would die before getting the answers!
In the same way, the Buddha said that people should not delay their spiritual path by chasing questions that do not lead to awakening.
Final Thought
So, why did the Buddha keep silent on these subjects?
Because his mission was to help people wake up, not to satisfy curiosity.
He wanted people to focus on what leads to peace and freedom, not endless debates.
The silence of the Buddha was a deep teaching in itself — sometimes, not answering is the most powerful answer.
