MO Mathai, the secretary of Nehru was in the know of all that happened in the PM house in addition to the office. Indira Gandhi, daughter of Nehru and future PM of India at that time had just separated from Firoz Khan Gandhi (a half Parsi half Muslim), whom Nehru hated. For all his secular credentials which were an eyewash for the gullible Indian Public, Nehru playing vote-bank politics thought he would lose majority Hindu votes if it came out that his daughter married a Muslim.

Indira, who was of loose morals from the beginning, had the hots for Mathai and embarked on a tumultuous no-holds-barred affair with him. There was no marriage but the only sexual relationship between the two. Mathai eventually fell out with the father-daughter duo and proceeded to write a tell-all book. The pressure was put on him and the book was released without the chapter on his relations with Indira (albeit an empty chapter was there). However, selective leaks were made. Indira went on to have several other affairs including those with Dinesh Singh, Foreign Affairs Minister, Dhirendra Brahmachari, yoga guru, Mohammad Yunus, nephew of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Frontier Gandhi and many more. I would like to add that Warren Andersen, Union Carbide Chief was allowed to leave

India in lieu of the US releasing Yunus' son involved in a blast thereafter Bhopal gas tragedy during Rajeev's rule.
